Position Description:

Purpose

This position is for a Research Technologist I in the lab of Dawn Wenzel, PhD. The Wenzel lab studies structure function relationships between proteins that regulate cell division. This position is perfect for someone wanting to start a career in biomedical research or gain more experience between undergrad and starting a Masters/MD/PhD program. Under general supervision, the ideal applicant will provide support for department of Biochemistry research through projects, execution of laboratory experiments, and maintenance, and communication of data, and execution of laboratory experiments.

Primary Functions

  • Perform experiments to support research projects including cloning, protein expression, purification, Western blots, etc.
  • Potential to learn more advanced biophysical techniques including, microscale thermophoresis, fluorescence polarization, X-ray crystallography, etc.

* Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.

* Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays.

* Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.

* Carry out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.

* Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research.

* Prepare media and maintain human cells by various culturing in techniques.

* Oversee daily lab operation in the absence of the supervisor or Principle Investigator.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.

Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree

Minimum Required Experience: No experience required

Preferred Education: B.S. by time of hiring.

Preferred Experience: Some lab experience outside of required coursework. Good lab notebook maintenance and organization skills. Experience with protein purification, cloning, PCR, Western blotting, and maintenance of mammalian cell lines a plus.
